Belts are one way to transmit the power generated by your motor zu your wheels. The transmission ratio of your board influences your choice in belt. If you don't use a tension roller and your motor pulley is too small (too few teeth) the belt will slip and you won't accelerate.
If the drive pulley is too big (too many teeth) you might not have enough torque to get started or your belt might rip.
